It is only natural to be intrigued by what grape wine making involves. After all, people have been drinking all sorts of wines for all sorts of occasions for many thousands of years. Grape wine is also popularly taken in after heavy meals because of the reputation of the substance for helping the stomach dissolve and absorb food. As an anti-depressant, wine, taken in regulated amounts, is many times considered to be excellent.
Virtually unlimited species of grapes
Grape wine making starts from selecting the species of grapes to make wine from. There are dozens of varieties of grapes from which to take your pick. Each variety results in specific characteristics in the wine. That is why a thorough conception of grape wine making is impossible without some information about grape varieties.
Malbec grape wine making
This is a species of purple grapes that is typical, as seen in drawings of the fruit, in its shape, its cluster formation, and its color. It is used to make red wines, notably, the French wines of Bordeaux. The variety grows in the Southwestern parts of France. It has been successfully cultured in other parts of the world, notably Canada and Argentina. Pure Malbec wine (varietal) is made from Argentine Malbec.
Malbec grape wine making produces a bland and soft wine with a fruity and succulent flavor. Its aroma may exude the fragrance of violets or herbals. The softness of the wine is due to its comparatively low acid content.
Cabernet Sauvignon grape wine making
This is another purple variety that is popularly used in grape wine making to produce red wines. From France, this variety of grape has travelled to the Americas, to Australia and to the other important grape wine making countries.
It is not an ancient variety since the first varieties were grown accidentally in 17th century France from a combination of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
Wines made from young Cabernet grapes typically exude a pepper bell flavor. This aroma is due to the presence of pyrazine in the grape. More mature grapes also produce this fragrance but to a much less degree.
Cabernet grape wine making is closely tied up with the use of oak containers for fermenting and aging the wine. Oak softens the somewhat harsh texture of the wine.
Merlot grape wine making
The Merlot variety of grapes is primarily used in combination with the Cabernet varieties to produce red wines. However, by itself, it may be fermented to produce a varietal wine or pure Merlot wine. It is also a purple grape. It is believed to be the third most extensively grown variety of grapes in the world. This is due as much to its extensive use in combination with other grape species as to the wide patronage enjoyed by varietal Merlot wine (pure Merlot wine) globally.
Merlot wine making makes soft, smooth and plum-flavored wine that ages faster than others. That is not currently a problem for wine manufacturers owing to the rate at which people consume Merlot wine.
